My favorite memories as a kid were from our Sunday school picnic.

I can recall the happiness I got from being around the wonderful people in the ministry. We gave thanks to God, then it was time for fun with my friends. We played games, ate food, and had great fun. Life had a certain simplicity to it.

The Fort Fisher aquarium is the perfect place to sponsor a Sunday school picnic. We found it’s a wonderful spot for fellowship with plenty of family-fun activities.

From sea urchins to sharks, witness the perfection of life. Let’s look at everything we saw on our adventure.

Let’s begin our tour at:

The Attractions

The Aquarium is a perfect way for the children to explore God’s most fascinating creations. Both kids and adults can look on the wide variety of animals housed there and learn more about them in fun, fascinating way.

The Cape Fear Conservatory

The first place to explore is the cape fear conservatory. We’ll see the outdoor garden filled with frogs, snakes, alligators, and even a rescued bald eagle. Here we meet Luna, a beautiful albino alligator. She is one of the last of her species with an estimated 50 living in the wild today.

As we walk around, we also spot box turtles hiding in the ground!

Coastal Waters Gallery

Next, the kids will get the chance to learn about the surf-zone rock life animals. Here they will learn about horseshoe crabs and sea urchins. This hands-on display is a fan-favorite because the kids get to feel the wildlife with their own hands.

Cape Fear Shoals

This is the best part. Here you’ll see eels, sharks, sea turtles and so much more. If you’re lucky, you might even catch a scuba diver! This is the largest saltwater exhibit the aquarium offers as a massive two-story area. It holds an amazing 235,000 gallons of water, to house the diverse aquatic life that lives there.

The Bamboo Shark Touch Pool

Built in 2012, it’s the newest addition to the aquarium. This hands-on display allows the kids to safely feel the bamboo sharks and learn more about them in a fun, interactive way.

The Exotic Aquatic Display

This display features lion fish, the spotted scorpion fish (native to North Carolina) and spiny lobsters. Along with the more recent addition, Australian spotted jellies.

The adults can have fun with the kids as well.

Behind the scenes tours

If you were ever curious about what happens behind the scenes at aquariums, this is your chance. You’ll get to see how they feed the animals, learn how they take care of them, and see special behind the wall exhibit access. It truly shows the hard-work the employees put into their jobs and the passion they have for the animals.

Relax at the beach

The beach is within walking distance. So, why not take the congregation?

The adults can relax and kick up their feet as the kids play in the sand.

Sunday school picnics can be a lot of fun, but when it’s time for a break, the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher is a great location to host your Sunday School picnic.

It allows you to see, up close, some of the Lord’s most beautiful beings. Let this act as a reminder of his ultimate power and grace. Thank you and have a blessed day!
